In letzter Zeit mal einen Monitor gekauft? Nein? Der Monitor-Markt ist momentan nicht so rosig… zumindest für TFTs. Wenn man die 113 dpi des MacBooks gewöhnt ist, erscheinen die 95 dpi eines 20"-Monitors (mit 1680x1050) irgendwie grob aufgelöst. Blöderweise gibt es im Prinzip keine Monitore mit höheren nativen Auflösungen (abgesehen von Eizo-Modellen ab 3.500 Euro). Schlimmer noch, selbst die 22"-Monitore haben 1680x1050 – das sind grottige 90 dpi. Schon klar, das viele Nutzer die Bedienelemente etwas größer haben wollen, aber da ja zunehmend auflösungsunabhängige Betriebssystem Verbeitung finden werden, halte ich das für etwas zweifelhaft. Es gibt ja hochauflösende Bildschirme: Viele 17"-Notebooks haben Auflösungen von 1920x1200…

Some days ago, I bought a new keyboard/mouse combination, namely the Logitech S530 Mac Desktop. I was tempted to buy it because Cyberport had a promotion and sold it for just €49, compared €62,46 at Amazon.de. After several days of usage, I like the keyboard (which was my main concern before the purchase). Even though I really enjoy typing on my MacBook’s keyboard, which is entirely different from most other keyboards, I quickly accomodated to the new keyboard. The keyboard is rather stable and looks solid. The mouse is not that bad either, but the fact that I constantly scroll to the left (with the four-ways scroll wheel) when I try to perform a middle click, annoys me. The three buttons to control the volume don’t really make sense, adjusting the volume is not something I do twice a minute. And after all, there are three nice buttons on the right side of the keyboard as well.

The Logitech software allows to reconfigure most of the buttons. However, the software is terribly instable; it crashes nearly every time I try to change something. The current software version is 2.1.3 – I guess the developers have cast dice to determine the version number.

One last thing that’s really odd: The symbol on the NumBlock’s Enter button: The Mac platform has a symbol for this: ⌤ (you may not be able to view this on a Windows machine). In lack of this symbol (which is available on the Mac OS X character palette), Logitech’s engineers decided to use a K, clockwise rotated. It comes close, but it’s not quite the symbol. For a Mac specific keyboard, they should at least have used the right symbols…

Since I have my MacBook, I am looking for a decent mouse. Don’t get me wrong, there are some good mice, but as the notebook already has Bluetooth, I want a Bluetooth mouse to get rid of the additional dongle. Yet, I couldn’t find a half-way decent mouse. Logitech only has one single Bluetooth mouse which is specifically for notebooks, but it’s pretty tiny and doesn’t fit my hand very well. Microsoft mice are generally not labeled as Mac compatible and the one I could find costs about EUR 75. Kensington offers also a tiny notebook bluetooth mouse. Apple’s mouse is also overpriced and has bad usability in addition to that (you have to lift your left finger if you want to “click” on the right button).

Wen der bläuliche Farbstich nach dem Update auf 10.4.8 auch etwas stört, findet hier das alte Farbprofil. Einfach in ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles ablegen und in Systemeinstellungen, Monitore, Farben das neue Profil auswählen.

Macbooktasche Ich habe vor genau einer Woche eine Notebooktasche für mein MacBook bei Raedan.de bestellt, und zwar die “Malibu Pineapple-Tini”. Und das Teil ist einfach super. Es passt genau um das MacBook (Maßanfertigung!), ist schön weich gepolstert, fusselt nicht (Lüftungsschlitze!) und einfach gut verarbeitet. Made in Sachsen. Und für ungefähr 30 € inklusive Versandkosten (!) ist es auch nicht überteuert. Übrigens stellt die Firma auch Taschen für fast alle anderen elektronischen Geräte her (Kameras, Handys, etc.). Hmm, ein Apple Cinnamon Toast wäre allerdings auch nicht schlecht…
